Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing in pure oxygen in a pressurized room that has up to three times higher than average air pressure, under these conditions your lungs will gather more oxygen than would be possible if you were breathing in normal air. There are many conditions that can be treated with hyperbaric oxygen that include serious infections, bubbles of air in your blood vessels and wounds that are a result of diabetes or radiation. Hyperbaric oxygen treatments are used widely in regenerative medicine and sports medicine.
How Does it Work?
The oxygen levels in your blood increase by breathing in pressurized pure oxygen. The oxygen is then carried throughout your body and helps fight bacteria (in case of infection) and stimulates the release of substances called growth factors, collagen and stem cells, which promote healing.
In normal conditions, your body already requires oxygen to function. When tissue in your body is injured, it requires even more oxygen to survive, repair itself and work properly. An increase in blood oxygen temporarily restores normal levels of blood gases and tissue function to promote healing and to fight infection. By accelerating phagocytosis and powering the actions of some antibiotics, modifying the immune response of the organism by increasing it’s function. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy also increases the dilation of blood vessels, reducing heart rate and blood pressure as well as producing a hypoglycemic effect.
